EBV MS Project

The purpose of this EU funded research initiative to uncover role of EBV in multiple sclerosis, its onset and progression, especially in the light of recent research in EBV’s role in triggering the development of MS.

The aim of this research, led by University of Bergen, is to understand why only a few EBV infected people develop MS, and define the underlying mechanism of this process. The research will also aim to investigate if targeting the EBV infection with antiviral treatments can improve the disease course or stop disease progression.

About MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, neurodegenerative disease in which a person’s immune system targets healthy nerves.

MS is most frequently diagnosed in people aged 20–40 years. It is an unpredictable disease that each person will experience differently, but common symptoms often include pain, fatigue, reduced mobility and cognitive dysfunction. The cause of MS is not known and there is currently no cure. However, timely diagnosis, treatment and support have a significant effect on disease progression and quality of life, regardless of the type of MS. Today, there are more than 1,2 million people living with MS in Europe.
