Empowering Patients and Communities with Real-World Data: Insights from the Prague Training

25.06.2025

On May 14, 2025, EMSP and the More-EUROPA project team held an engaging face-to-face training session, titled “Real-World Data: How Sharing and Analysis Can Benefit You”, at the Hotel Don Giovanni in Prague. This interactive event was designed to empower patients, caregivers, clinical staff, and patient organisation representatives by deepening their understanding of Real-World Data (RWD) and how it can help shape better healthcare decisions.

The training was supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (Grant No. 101095479) and brought together experts and participants from across Europe. Led by trainers -experts Dana Horakova, Jiří Drahota, Jana Hlavacova, Gregor Fistravec, the session covered a range of important topics:

  • Introduction to RWD: definition, sources, and types of RWD.
  • RWD and its use in healthcare: understanding the role of RWD in healthcare decision-making.
  • RWD vs Clinical Trials: comparison of RWD and clinical trials, their strengths and limitations.
  • Analysing RWD: understanding how RWD is analysed, the role of statistical methods, and the importance of data quality.
  • Ethical considerations: discussing ethical considerations and privacy concerns when using RWD.
  • Examples of RWD studies: discussing real-life examples of RWD studies and their contribution to scientific and medical knowledge (will be included into the discussion parts of the previous sessions).
  • Introduction to the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and Real-World Data (RWD)

Participants found the training both thought-provoking and empowering. As one participant shared:

“Clearly communicated and accessible language used to convey this. Thought-provoking content. I feel more informed and as a result more empowered.”

Another noted:

“It helped me better understand why real-world data is essential.”

Interactive quizzes, group discussions, and real-world case studies kept the atmosphere lively and inclusive, ensuring everyone had the chance to engage and share their thoughts. The event concluded with a collaborative dinner, further strengthening connections within the MS community and among European patient advocates.

Why Real-World Data Matters

Real-world data helps bridge the gap between clinical trials and everyday life. By sharing and analysing data from real patients, researchers and regulators can make better decisions about medicines and treatments that are truly relevant to people’s daily experiences.
