State of Multiple Sclerosis Caregivers in Europe
06.10.2025A Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis doesn’t just change one life—it ripples through entire families and communities. According to the EMSP IMSS survey, 86% of MS caregiving is provided by family members, partners, or friends, who give an average of 18.3 hours per week—rising to over 40 hours in some countries. Yet 12% of people with MS who need a caregiver lack access to one entirely. These caregivers are lifelines, yet they remain largely unseen and unsupported.
Despite this extraordinary commitment, systemic support remains inadequate and unequal across Europe. Only 15 countries consult MS communities on policy, and just 16 out of 35 provide support for those caring for children with MS. On European Carers Day, the message is clear: caregivers need more than appreciation—they need concrete policies, workplace flexibility, financial recognition, respite services, and a voice at the policy table. It’s time Europe closed these gaps and treated carers as the essential healthcare partners they truly are.
